Metformin adherence in people with type 2 diabetes impacts on HbA1c outcomes. This study was conducted on Waikato practices in 2019. Of 1595 patients across 10 practices, those who had more prescriptions for their metformin in the 18 month study period, were likely to have a better HbA1c. Note that none of the practices were with Hauraki PHO. However, the outcomes show that Māori received fewer follow up prescriptions for their metformin in the time period. Further study is required to find solutions to the issue, but the use of electronic reminders, knowledge about the medication and fees are likely to be contributing factors.
